Amravati city also known as ‘Ambanagari’, a regional headquarter of Amravati Division is an educational hub in the state of Maharashtra together with its historical and political advancements. It is the 8th most populous metropolitan city in Maharashtra state. Literally meaning “the city of immortals” Amravati has long history. Tradition links it to the abode of goddess ‘Amba’ (mother), whose shrine is located here. Amba Devi Temple, a place from where Lord Krishna eloped with Rukhmini from the venue of wedding ceremony. It was capital of legendary Vidarbha Janapada and the name of capital city, Kundinapura is still preserved in the form of a place called Koundinyapur.
One Buddhist vihara and some incomplete rock-hewn carved caves are the highlights of Amravati Division. The modern district of Amravati is famous for launch of Project Tiger in tribal belt of Dharani, Melghat where a beautiful resort, museum and camping managed by the forest department.
