Shri Shivaji Education Society, Amravati founded by Panjabrao alias Bhausaheb Deshumkh, the first Agriculture Minister of Government of India in the year 1932.
The society started for the purpose of progress in the field of education by establishing special institutes everywhere especially Vidarbha region among poor and backward classes, and to encourage sports, games, school education, women’s education etc.
The society began with just one school and one hostel; but today, has grown in to the biggest educational organization in central India with enormous branches in all districts of Vidarbha regions of Maharashtra state. It is also worth mentioning that, under its canopy there are 277 institutions including Agriculture, Engineering, Medical, Nursing, Science, Law, School education etc. Society indeed a major stakeholder in the field of education in Amravati region as it has bagged many prestigious awards from state government in recognition of its dedication to the society.
Society was awarded 'Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Dalit Mitra' in 1993-94 by the Govt. of Maharashtra. In 1999-2000,the society was awarded 'Gadge Maharaj Memorial Award’, and in the same year, the Govt. of Maharashtra declared as "Best Administered Society" in the state of Maharashtra and bestowed upon it a cash award of Rs. 1 lakh. In its citation, state government formally recognized the contribution made by society in the field of education and cultural advancement.
The younger generation is sadly unaware or half aware of Dr. Panjabrao Deshmukh. Hence, the society erected a memorial complex ‘Smruti Bhavan’ in the memory of Dr. Panjabrao Deshmukh where activities related to his life, his work, efforts towards nurturing and expansion of society, and his role as a union Agricultural Minister are narrated.
